‘Of What Value Is It?’ Honesty and Hope, ‘with a little help from my friend’ — St. Paul

Justification by Works of Law vs. Justification by Faith

From the NYC Conference, Linebaugh gave a tour de force talk on the law, grace, and justification, complete with innumerable references to literature, music, and everyday life. And anyone who was there will probably never forget the image of Linebaugh jumping off of chairs and crashing to the floor.

My husband and I just listened to this and will pass on to our son, friends, and grandchildren. What a powerful word of hope and truth. We are God’s beloved. Henri Nouwen and George MacDonald are cheering. It’s not our biography that gives us our belovedness but the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.

A seemingly overlooked, succinct, yet incredibly powerful verse, Titus 3:5, encapsulates what Jonathan spoke to us. “He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy”. Salvation is all on the basis of His mercy, plainly and simply.
