A quick note on that ABBA song: it might be the perfect example of what PZ talked about in his address at last week’s conference, namely, something that is simultaneously ridiculous and profound. I’m as big a fan of Fleetwood Mac as anyone, but even they never wrote a song as explicitly divorce-centered as Hey, Hey Helen – and in Fleetwood Mac (as far as I know) there weren’t any children involved. Bjorn (the guy on guitar) penned the lyrics for his wife Agnetha (the blonde) to sing, following the birth of their first child. They got divorced three years later, after the birth of their second baby. In that light, it’s a devastating song (“does it hurt when they ask for Daddy?”) – heavier in both lyric and arrangement than what people think of when they think of ABBA. On the other hand, the very title elicits a chuckle, and the outfits and dance routine completely undermine any remaining seriousness. A thing of great beauty, in other words.
