One of the ways we often introduce the Gospel is to ask the question, “What keeps you up at night?” It seems that we all have something that we worry about to the point of losing sleep, some situation where our only hope is the message of God’s one-way love given through Jesus Christ.

Don Chaffer of Waterdeep (big surprise!) sings an amazing song about this called “Up Before the Sun”. Written shortly after his mother died and his father was diagnosed with cancer, it has always been an encouragement to me in the middle of the night. Here are the lyrics:

Up before the sun

Of all the things I could have chosen
This is not the one

Neither sad nor fun
To be chewing on my finger nails
Up before the sun

Angry with the Word
Of all the ways I could have listened
This is what I heard

Neither fish nor bird
To be on the earth and wrestling
Angry with the Word

Trusting in the heart
All the things that could’ve killed me
Or torn me apart

Neither end nor start
To be somewhere in the middle of
Trusting in Your heart

To be chewing on my finger nails
Up before the sun
To be on the earth and wrestling
Angry with the Word
To be somewhere in the middle of
Trusting in Your heart
