I finally got around to watching the DVD this past weekend, and it was incredible! It’s so gratifying to see someone do justice to Dylan’s Gospel period. Do yourself a favor:

Even cooler, a clip of the man himself singing “In The Garden” in 1986, complete with jaw-dropping preamble (just a few months after the release of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome!):

That emo girl at the end of the “In The Garden” video is a nice touch.

The big grey haired singer who prayed for God to “Illuminate the room!” was incredible. The lines he sings from “When He Returns”!!!

How long can you falsily and deny what is real?
How long can you hate yourself for the weakness you conceal?

Un-fucking-believable, writing and gospel performance alike.

The woman who sings “Gotta Serve Somebody” can’t quite keep up with Dylan’s vocal rhythms in the verses. Their version is pretty much his arrangement, at least it’s the same tempo with that gospel-rock feel.

But what to say really? Amazing video, there’s so much in that trailer to examine. Thanks for the post Dave.

The 1986 “In the Garden” video is powerful, powerful, powerful, in a towering way. M. and I are transfixed.
