Josh C recently posted a lovely article on some local Christian Kitsch (“Shades of Glory” — a guy marketing Christian sunglasses).
Not to be outdone, and to show that Roman Catholics are just as good at this sort of earnest and well-intended salesmanship, here’s a website I really like that markets little statuettes to the parents of Christian athletes.
The slogan for each little statue is JESUS IS MY COACH. Talk about shades of glory!
You can find these statues pretty easy (on a number of RC websites) if you do a google search for “Jesus Playing Sports.” My favorite thing about the series is that in a number of the statues Jesus goes from a mild supportive “helper” to a kick-ass competitor, aggressively grabbing the ball (puck, etc.) from the hapless 8-year old child.

I really like the football statuette with Jesus handing off the ball to one kid and the other kid tackling Jesus…Although I am not sure what the theological implications are…

Thanks Dylan. That was a special joy. My favorites were BODY BUILDER and DENTAL HYGENIST. Jesus seemed to really get into pumping iron and looking at people's teeth.

One of the things I learn from this kind of artwork (including the RC statues) is that Jesus has a pretty limited wardrobe. No matter whether he's shooting hoops, whacking a puck on the ice, running track, pumping iron, or cleaning teeth, he always wears the same white gown.

PS. I also liked GOLFER. Jesus seems awful impatient here, like he's been waiting an hour for his chance to tee off, which I kinda like.

It look like our Lord is about to lay the smackdown on one of those hockey kids.

I'm betting Mark Driscoll has the whole collection.

I think he was focusing more on the T-shirt collection the last few years … but he might have some of these.
