Early last year, some good news dropped into our inboxes. Mark Friesen, a minister in Peru, was interested in translating our book Law and Gospel into Spanish. We believe the good news is for everybody, but we are, in many ways, limited in our capacity to share it. So what a gift it was to have Mark make this slim publication even more accessible. El libro “La Ley y el Evangelio” me fue presentado por mi hijo Scott, quien lo había leído para un curso de desarrollo del liderazgo en la iglesia del Redeemer (Redentor) de Waco Texas. Y cuanto más leía y entendía su mensaje, más me convencía de su importancia. No es que fuera completamente nuevo para mí; sino que, confirmaba, aclaraba y organizaba mis pensamientos que se encontraban un poco dispersos sobre el tema.
El ministerio que Dios nos ha dado en Perú, abarca el discipulado y la mentoría de hombres y mujeres de todas las edades, incluyendo pastores y líderes de la iglesia, así que naturalmente estaba ansioso por compartir fragmentos de “La Ley y el Evangelio” con ellos en español. Pero en realidad quería compartir toda la obra. Con el permiso de Mockingbird empecé a traducir el libro al español en abril de 2020 y se finalizó en noviembre de 2020.
Nuestro objetivo al traducir esta importantísima obra era tener una traducción fiel al significado original y lo más parecida posible al inglés en la redacción, pero que aún sonara natural en español. Queríamos que el mensaje fuera claro para la mente y el corazón del lector.
Traducir modismos y figuras retóricas siempre es difícil; sin embargo, con la ayuda del pastor David Shapiama, que habla con fluidez el inglés y el español; y el profesor de español, P. Ernesto Arévalo, creo que logramos navegar con éxito por esas áreas. Por ejemplo, fue difícil traducir y entender la esencia de una sección que presentaba una analogía extraída del béisbol, pues en vez de traducirlo literalmente, era necesario reformularlo para que los lectores que no están familiarizados con ese deporte pudieran todavía relacionarse con las vistas y los sonidos y entender el mensaje.
Después de traducir algunos capítulos o fragmentos, las leí con amigos a quienes acompaño en su crecimiento espiritual y ver cómo lo entendían y luego, profundizamos su significado. Esa acción fue uno de los mayores beneficios y razones que me motivaron a traducir este libro en equipo. Le agradezco a cada uno de ellos por su valiosa contribución en la comprobación de esta obra. Usé también el método de comprobación que es traducirlo nuevamente del español al inglés y compararlo con el texto original. Finalmente, repasé todo el texto con Ernesto para las correcciones finales de gramática, ortografía y puntuación. En el camino me remití a los editores de Mockingbird para aclarar el significado de algunas ideas del texto y para solicitar cambios en la redacción. Aprecio sus amables y rápidas respuestas a mis frecuentes preguntas.
Aunque dudo que tuviéramos tanto éxito como queríamos con respecto al uso del español estándar, ese era al menos nuestro objetivo. Para algunos puede ser obvio que fue traducido en el Perú, y algunos en Perú, sin dudarlo señalarán la región de la selva tropical de Pucallpa como su origen.
Al final, hicimos lo mejor que pudimos y dejamos el resto en manos de Dios para llevar la explicación del mensaje del evangelio que se presenta en este bello libro; además, proclamarlo en las mentes de los lectores y en sus corazones.

The book Law and Gospel was introduced to me by my son Scott, who read it for leadership development at Redeemer Church of Waco, Texas. The more I read and understood it, the more I was convinced of the importance of its message. Not that it was entirely new to me, but it confirmed, clarified, and organized my somewhat scattered thoughts on the subject.
The ministry God has given us in Peru involves discipling and mentoring men and women of all ages, including pastors and church leaders, so naturally I was anxious to share portions of Law and Gospel with them in Spanish, but I really wanted to share the entire work with them. With Mockingbird’s blessing, I began to translate the book into Spanish in April of 2020 and finished it in November of 2020.
Our goal in translating was to have a finished text that was true to the original in meaning and as close as possible to the English in wording but that still sounded natural in Spanish. We wanted the message to be clear and real to the mind and heart of the reader.
Translating idioms and figures of speech is always difficult; however, with the help of David Shapiama, a Peruvian pastor who is also fluent in English, and Spanish language teacher P. Ernesto Arévalo, I believe we successfully navigated those areas. In this work, a section drawn from baseball needed to be re-worded so that the many readers not familiar with baseball could still relate to the sights and sounds and understand the message.
After translating portions, I read them together with friends I mentor to see how they understood it. Together we then dug deeper into its meaning, and I am grateful for their valuable contributions. That is one of my favorite mentoring tools and is one of the biggest benefits and motivations of translating as a team. I also used another method of checking, which is to translate the text from Spanish back into English and compare it with the original. After working through problem areas, I went through the entire text with Ernesto for final grammar, spelling, and punctuation corrections. Along the way I occasionally referred back to the editors at Mockingbird to clarify the meaning of some texts and for approval of changes in wording. I appreciate their gracious and quick responses to my questions.
Although I doubt that we were as successful as we wanted to be with regard to using standard Spanish, doing so was at least our goal. To some, it may be obvious that it was translated in Peru, and some in Peru will no doubt even point to the tropical jungle region of Pucallpa as its origin.
In the end, we did our best and left the rest in God’s hands to convey the explanation of the gospel message presented in this beautiful book; in addition to proclaiming it in the minds and hearts of the readers.
