100 Years of Robert Farrar Capon

Grace (and Food) Beyond Joyless Religion

Mockingbird / 10.27.25

Yesterday would have been the 100th birthday of Robert Farrar Capon — the author, theologian, Episcopal clergyman, and indomitable advocate for grace. His writing exudes such pastoral brilliance, humor, profound insight, and abounding creativity: commentariesmemoirsworks of theologynovels, even cookbooks. The man always had a way of cutting through the religious fog to find the gracious heart of God. If religion sought to tame God through a joyless piety that sucks the air out of any room, Capon believed God to be wild, playful, and full of unbounded delight. God threw the best parties, served the finest food and drink, and would laugh it up with those religion thought were beyond redemption.

Throughout Mbird’s existence, Capon’s brilliance has served as a constant luminary — so much so that we published several of his books. In honor of the man to whom we owe so much, we thought it appropriate to feature a selection of his recipes, writings, and other articles inspired by him.
