Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose. At least, that’s what the old song says. Life, on the other hand, often feels like one loss after another — loss of youth, loss of status, loss of hope, loss of, well, life. Loss hurts, and so we run ourselves ragged staving it off. Personally, professionally, institutionally, you name it. We feel anything but free.

At the core of the Christian message lies the audacious claim that God’s love is not subject to decline or decay. We hear a voice of hope louder than our fears. “Jesus Never Leaves Me” is how a different (better) song puts it.
