Submissions

Mockingbird is always on the lookout for fresh contributions from new and established voices. We welcome pitches and article submissions to our website and print magazine that reflect our mission and vision. Mockingbird is a platform for sharing observations on how everyday life, culture, and the good news of Christianity intersect. We are guided by the conviction that the gospel is true all of the time in all places, and we consider the written word to be a particularly useful vehicle for demonstrating how the Christian faith and grace of God illuminate everything we do and see (and vice versa).

To that end, should you decide to submit work, here are a few guidelines to help in the process:

  • Mockingbird is an outward-looking project. We want our content to be as accessible as possible, to as many people as possible, Christians and non-Christians alike. So tone is very important to us. It is essential that submissions not assume the reader is “on our side,” whatever side that may be. We find this helps prevent insider-speak, encourages persuasion rather than assertion, and avoids counterproductive moralisms about what “we” need to do.
  • Mockingbird is 100% by humans and for humans. Put another way, we believe the articles that are best positioned to speak to the intersection of faith and everyday life are those that arise from the thoughts, the questions, and the very words of a human author — an author who learns something through the writing process and is personally invested in what they type. Accordingly, every submission will be scanned by A.I.-detection software.
  • While we realize that AI can be a helpful research and proofing tool — and do not prohibit its limited use in such instances — Mockingbird reserves the right to decline to publish and/or remove any submission or publication it determines to have been generated, in whole or part, by AI.
  • We will take care to respond to all inquiries as promptly as possible, bearing in mind that there is always a significant backlog to contend with. So please let us know if your article is particularly timely. Simultaneous submissions will not be accepted.
