The Single Piece of Good News in a World Drowning in an Ocean of Blame

One more jaw-dropping passage from Robert Farrar Capon before we let him rest in peace (for a bit). This comes from the preface to The Romance of the Word, written in 1994 when that collection was first issued. Instead of introducing the book(s) proper, he used the opportunity to compose a short autobiography, and it […]

A Totally Biased Review of Robert Farrar Capon’s Between Noon and Three

There are precious few books that elicit tears; even fewer books of theology. Walker Percy echoed T.S. Eliot’s “dissociation of sensibility” in saying that the modern person “cannot think and feel at the same time.” Between Noon and Three: Romance, Law, and the Outrage of Grace, named for the period of darkness just before Christ’s death, comes as close […]

Descending Theology: The Resurrection by Mary Karr

Vasiliy Kandinsky's "Great Resurrection (Grosse Auferstehung)"

Vasiliy Kandinsky’s “Great Resurrection (Grosse Auferstehung)”

From the far star points of his pinned extremities,
cold inched in—black ice and squid ink—
till the hung flesh was empty. Lonely in that void
even for pain, he missed his splintered feet,
the human stare buried in his face.
He ached for two hands made of meat
he could reach to the end of.
In the corpse’s core, the stone fist of his heart

began to bang on the stiff chest’s door,
and breath spilled back into that battered shape. Now
it’s your limbs he long to flow into–
from the sunflower center in your chest
outward–as warm water
shatters at birth, rivering every way.

Hopelessly Devoted: Matthew Chapter Twenty Eight Verses One Through Ten

This morning’s devotion comes from Jacob Smith. A reminder that this devotion (and 364 others) will be released at the Spring Conference in the long-awaited Mockingbird Devotional: Good News for Today (and Every Day). “…Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has […]

George Herbert – Easter Wings 1

Lord, who createdst man in wealth and store       Though foolishly he lost the same,            Decaying more and more,                    Till he became                        Most poor:         […]

All The Young Dudes Carry The News: The Confessions of Mott the Hoople

“All The Young Dudes” is both much more and much less than the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the beautiful rock monster known as Mott the Hoople. More than the tip because their career hinged on it. The single not only revived their sagging spirits (and commercial prospects) at a crucial juncture, […]

Pearl Jam Promoting Death and Resurrection?

With Spring in full-bloom, I’ve had one of my favorite Pearl Jam songs “on repeat” in my mental playlist: “Thumbing My Way”. It’s a song of deep mourning and regret of lost love. Mr. Vedder is essentially describing a death, and he’s hoping for resurrection, for the springtime ahead…aren’t we all? Thankfully we don’t have […]
