“But trying to use willpower to overcome the apathetic sort of sadness that accompanies depression is like a person with no arms trying to punch themselves until their hands grow back.  A fundamental component of the plan is missing and it isn’t going to work.”

Both the cartoon and quote are taken from the terrifyingly brilliant piece “Adventures in Depression” over at Hyperbole and a Half, ht BM & MS. It’ll have you in stitches and tears, maybe even simultaneously.

  1. Chris Legg says:

The beatings will stop when morale improves – wouldnt that look good on a church roadsign…

Or as Rich Mullins said “I’d rather fight you for something I don’t really want than take what you give that I need… and I beat my head against so many walls… and I’m falling down… I’m falling on my knees…”

Depression is real, and why sometimes in Christianity we have a problem with that is beyond me. Doesnt our theology teach that we are frail, weak, creatures of dust? Then why are we offended at the thought of being weak?
