Just got another interesting note from Marcus, a nonChristian NYC friend-of-Mockingbird. He writes:

Do you know Faure’s Sanctus? It was used in that movie “Paperhouse.” As an atheist, when I hear it, I want to fall down on my knees and thank Christians for giving this to the world. It’s the closest I get to a feeling of belief — of what I think it must feel like to feel God’s love. It’s unspeakably beautiful (and he gives us an audio link to it — SD).

Faure’s other religious music is wonderful, too. But Sanctus is his masterpiece. It seems like he tapped into something.

    I love that Marcus.

My mom, who is 70 years old, is not a particularly spiritual person, though she raised us in the church. (In the South, that's something you just DO – or did back then, anyway; just part of being a good citizen…) But she still says, to this day, that music is the reason she believes in God. That feeling you get when certain chords happen – certain combinations of just the right notes – is, for her, God saying "I'm here." And for her, it only happens with "sacred" music. For me, it's not that limited… or, perhaps, my definition of "sacred" is a bit broader than hers. Anyway, I believe that God speaks through music, even to those who don't acknowledge Him. He draws them closer, whether they want to go there or not. That's just what He does.
