  1. Matt and Megan Magill says:

there you go DZ – get the crowes in there…..how'd you like the review?

  2. DZ says:

What follows is Matt Magill's great review of the (great) new Black Crowes record, Before The Frost… After The Freeze.

"As far as the Crowes go, this is perhaps the finest Black Crowes record. These old souls are now who they always wanted to be but didn't know it…old and full of soul.

At least old enough to know where they've been and where they want to go from here and enough soul to do go there with style and substance.

There are a few misses but, by in large, this turn of the century, most-American-of-American records is rugged and raw and sublimely imperfect. "Appaloosa" is epic and "Roll Old Jeremiah" is stunningly close to everything I love about music – complete with Chris' voice skipping out b/c they're doing all the tunes live with no edits. Larry Campbell (from Levon Helm's Band) is so appropriate playing all the fiddle and pedal steel and Sven on the upright bass is a delight – not to mention some mean mandolin from Luther Dickenson.

They're becoming a country band. Chris has wanted to move in this direction for years. Check the RS article preceding the release. He said he's done recording in cities. He's looking for pastoral places that speak "earth" to him. Check the line, "The music looks just like it feels".

Sven [Pipien, Crowes bassist] told me a couple of years ago that this is where he saw them heading. He said Rich likes the big guitar stuff but Chris is constantly trying to move in a more organic country direction. "Garden Gate" is unbelievable – sounds like a Louvin Bros cover that they were always meant to do.

I thanked God b/c they are growing older so they should allow their music to grow old. They are growing into the best of what The Band was. I love R'n'R but The Stones really sicken me after Exile – and Beggars is their masterpiece precisely b/c it's so country. Just be who you are (there's an idea – 1000 words on the Law of the Rolling Stones). Rock n' Roll is youth/angst/stupidity/energy – but at 33 I'll take pain/suffering/joy/relational ups and downs any day over sexy come-on lines.

Call the Crowes pot-smoking burnouts if you want but they are returning to something great that always has been great – American music – and they're doing it better than anybody out there. Staying close to home is their strength – and you and I both know what the source of that is…the Gospel. Now they may not know that – do I hear common grace? Holla!

In the rootsiest portions of the album you'll catch phases like, "Will we grow to love the Lord?" in the song "And The Band Played On". What! Is that Chris Robinson asking that? And although the song is a little heavy for me, what a line, "Been a Long time Waiting on Love".

There are a few throw away tunes (Kept My Soul and Greenhorn and Lady of Avenue A) but you can't cut 20 Live songs and have it all be stellar. I was truly bowled over by the quality of so much of it – i can't complain about the missteps.

Overall it's a 20-song great album but really and, in a way I wish it had been released this way – it's a 11-Song ***** Masterpiece – but then again, you might not find a bigger fan than me.

My ideal tracklisting would have been:

    Good Morning Captain
    Appaloosa
Train That Makes a Lonely Sound
    Shady Grove
    And the Band Played On
    Houston Don't Dream About Me
    Roll Old Jerimiah
    Shine Along
    Garden Gate
    So Many Times
    Fork in the River
